Importing a car from Belgium
When importing used cars, many car dealers turn to the classic Export countries like for example Germany. However, the used car market in Belgium also offers plenty of opportunities for the professional car trade. But what should you consider when importing cars from Belgium?
Advantages of importing a car from Belgium
What immediately stands out in the import figures is that Belgium is particularly interesting for purchasing young cars. There are relatively many young used cars (less than one year old) for sale, placing Belgium in third position in this age category. In Belgium, prices have indeed risen, but less steeply than in surrounding countries, making it possible to strike relatively good deals.
Importing petrol, hybrid, or electric used cars from Belgium
When we look at the supply of used cars in Belgium and the choices made by purchasers for import, it aligns well with other countries in Europe. Still, the vast majority (more than 90 percent) of all imported cars are equipped with a petrol engine.
Although the import of (plug-in) hybrids and electric cars is increasing significantly, these cars still represent only a small part of the total import. If you are looking for the right mix in your own range of used cars, then the non-plug-in hybrid, after the petrol car, is the best choice. Next come the plug-in and fully electric used cars.
Which car brands to import from Belgium
It comes as no surprise that German brands top the wish list of Dutch car dealers. The demand in the Netherlands for a used Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, or Mercedes remains high. Following them are brands like Ford, Toyota, Renault, Volvo, Opel, and Peugeot.
In Belgium, Volkswagen generally leads the sales lists in new car sales, but this is not always the case. For example, BMW was the best-selling car brand in Belgium in 2021. These are cars that are now being offered for sale on the used car market and thus represent an interesting offer for purchasers.
In 2022, the five most popular new cars in Belgium were the Citroën C3, Dacia Sandero, Toyota Yaris, Volvo XC40, and Mini Cooper. Following them are the Peugeot 308, Peugeot 208, BMW X3, BMW X1, and Audi Q3. Dutch car dealers looking to purchase and import these cars second-hand definitely have a good opportunity in Belgium. Additionally, similar to the Netherlands, there is a lot of supply from popular German brands.
